On the road
Waking up at 5:30 with only four hours sleep is not the best way to start the day, but the prospect of river rafting, mixed with the fascinatingly empty roads of early-morning Kaohsiung, quickly pushed more than enough adrenaline into our bodies to wake us up.
River Rafting on the Laonong River
After getting our gear on and some quickly safety instructions we, with our hundred or so fellow rafters, were loaded onto the trucks
like sheep and taken down to our boats on the shore of Laonong.
We hit the water and immediately there was some action- excellent fun, our raft bobbing up and down in tune with the waves. The
weather was humid but the water icy, so the constant splashing of others was not just fun, but cooling. It was an exciting ride, though
due to recent dry weather a little tame. If you really want a thrill ride wait for some rain and wind, or even after a typhoon. I'll be back
then, too!
Paintball
The rafting company offers a package including a game of paintball at a nearby property, so after some lunch we donned our uniforms,
clicked off the safety and... got incredibly hurt by the other, more experienced team. Those little balls leave marks! But it was worth it.
If you have never tried paintball before you simply must- a million times better than a computer game.
Maolin
We arrived at the De En Gorge Hotel in the afternoon. It offers cabins, camping and special non-advertised dorm rooms for
backpackers and foreigners. It also provides meals that feature some local plants and vegetables. At night someone from the place
showed all the visitors around the area, pointing out interesting fauna and flora. A breezy end to a hectic day.
