Day 3
We woke up to another clear blue sky on day 3 in Taidong. After breakfast we met up with our friendly taxi driver Bai Lang and headed for Gaotai. A short drive across the rift valley to the central mountain range and we arrived at our first destination. We were greeted by a friendly group of people from the paragliding association and they explained that they were waiting for the wind to change before we could take off.
We rode and jumped the bikes until we were told it was time to go flying, in fact we were enjoying ourselves so much that the young boy that was helping us had to practically drag us away! A run up the hill on the back of a truck was followed by a bit of a wait while the wind blew and blustered around the peak. Paragliding isn't safe when the wind is too strong, but once the speed dropped we were given the go ahead to jump. The flight was absolutely amazing, words can't describe the incredible views or the feeling of floating hundreds of metres above the ground. Our guides were excellent, too, guiding us down safely, but also ensuring that we enjoyed every second of the trip.
After grounding our feet again, we headed to the Bunun Tribe Culture Center. The center is a fantastic place, not only a wonderful place to look around and learn about the Bunun tribe's culture, there is also a much more important side to it, too. The center provides jobs and income that the community sorely needs and also gives the local children a chance to get a good education. Ginger, our guide, was fantastic and showed us around the center and told us lots of interesting things about the tribe.
Our driver, Bailang, picked us up again and drove us to a traditional aboriginal restaurant for dinner. We tasted some Formosan Muntjac (barking deer), betel nut flowers and some barbecued mountain pork. The freshness and the variety of the food was as good as we could have hoped for and it was a real treat to try these new dishes!
After dinner we raced up to the Museum of Prehistory's Water Fountain performance. We sneaked our way through the water fountain maze getting more than slightly wet in the process! Then listening to some more aboriginal music, we watched as the fountains and bright lights danced their way around us. It was a fitting end to what was an another utterly unbelievable day!
