Having Fun at Sun Moon Lake
Sun Moon Lake is also very rich in culture, particularly the aboriginal Thao (邵族) tribe, for which the town we stayed in was named (Ita Thao). We rented a motorized bicycle and traveled around the lake, while exploring aboriginal art and food. We also tried the local Sun Moon Lake Black Tea (日月潭紅茶) and many others as we became good friends with a local tea shop owner.

Wen-Wu Temple
Wen Wu Temple was a little unexpected treat along our way as we left Sun Moon Lake to head south to Lugu. Wen Wu Temple is a huge and amazingly beautiful temple on a mountain side that overlooks the valleys below.

Sun Moon Lake Forest Black Tea
We had the opportunity to visit a very reclusive and premium tea farm that produces organic red tea. So premium, in fact, that one 600 g package of tea costs over 30,000 NTD (almost $1,000 USD). And we got to drink some. AND he gave us a ton of sample packages :)

Lu-Gu Dong-Ding Oolong Tea
Only an hour away by car, we traveled to the township of Lugu where we drank the local Dong Ding Oolong tea (凍頂烏龍茶). We climbed around in a local tea farmer's tea fields, which overlooked the valley and town of Lugu below.

Exciting Journey to Alishan (Ali Mountain)
This was an event in and of itself. We traversed the most intensely winding and twisting mountain roads as we decided to take the "scenic route", i.e., off the highway, to Alishan. Although scary and dangerously foggy and cloudy at times (we were up quite high), the views were absolutely worth it. As we broke through the cloud line, we were surrounded by the beautiful tea farms that grow the product true to their name: Taiwan High Mountain Tea.

Alishan High Mountain Food (Yummy!)
Finally we arrived at Alishan Visiter Center Area. Alishan (Ali Mountain, "shan" means "mountain" in Chinese) is at 2216 meters above sea level. In the hot summer months in Taiwan, the temperature at sea level is usually around 38 C (100.4 F); however, at this altitude, it was only 17 C ( 62.6F)! We both forgot to bring warmer clothes with us, and we were STARVING after driving 4 hours! So, we headed to a famous restaurant, and treated ourselves with some delicious and warm food - mushroom chicken hotpot, ginger-fried mountain deer meat, mountain pork fried with mustard greens, and stir-fried high mountain cabbage. High mountain food is something everyone must try when traveling toTaiwan, especially the high mountain vegetables - the unbelievably crisp texture and natural sweetness will win your heart! Most importantly, it's cheap too! All the delicious food we had here was only 700 NTD (around 21 USD) and, one of the best feature in Taiwan, you don't pay tax or tip for food!

Please check Althea's Wretch blog Day 3-5 Alishan Restaurant for Chinese travelogue.
We also tried some high mountain tea in a tea shop next to the restaurant. Alishan high mountain tea tastes fantastic! The magic of high mountain weather brings all the agricultural products to a whole different level of growth and quality.
Since that we planned to see the famous sunrise and "The Ocean of Cloud" tomorrow in Alishan, we needed to wake up at 3 am! Soon after dinner, we checked in our room in Alishan Youth Activity Center, showered and went to bed! Needed lots of energy tomorrow!
